LANGFOOD.org is a food security organization dedicated to preserving land and promoting locally grown food in Langford.

Langford’s small farms and acreages – in and outside the ALR – are not productive because of the world-wide experiment of importing cheap, chemicalized food over great distances that began about forty years ago – displacing the only known way of feeding ourselves since we walked the earth – local production.

Rising fuel costs (a reality, not probability) will force us to return to our old tried and true methods, but our farmlands and forests are being churned into houses and amenities literally every single day, despite available urban land. Fifty years ago 85 per cent of food was still local. Today less than 10 per cent of food is local and that number is shrinking as the population grows at a rapid pace – an equation that can only lead to problems.

Langford still has the potential to produce much more food and become a “go-to” destination for the foody, environmental, organic farming, and other growing consumer bases that swell the movement toward healthier lifestyles and local food – but only 292 acres remain in the ALR, with applications for exclusion constantly before the Commission.

Citizen initiatives such as Joseph Lohbrunner Farm, Happy Valley Lavender Farm, Langford Lakes and Area Protection Society (LLAPS), the Goldstream Farmers Market lead the way in preserving and promoting farming, food security and green/blue spaces for future generations. The fledgling Goldstream Farmers Market is already a wild success and has much potential for growth if there is enough local supply. A Green Mapping project is currently being organized by volunteers and a small grant from the city that will contribute to the local knowledge base.
